Posted by Sherri Starcher

The last several months have brought significant speculation about President Trump’s long-awaited legislation to replace Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA). Though Trump has pushed lawmakers to get onboard with his American Health Care Act (AHCA), the Act was ultimately withdrawn from vote with Obamacare (OC) remaining as the law of the land for the foreseeable future. If there’s one thing that is constant in the healthcare industry, is that it’s constantly evolving.

Change has become the norm. With healthcare reform, MACRA, the switch from fee-for-service to value-based care, etc., healthcare providers are faced with adopting technology to comply not only with federal regulations, but to stay relevant and ahead of the curve in this new era where the patient has become a consumer.

As marketers, we are always concerned with getting the message out to our target audience, and in the case of a healthcare provider, that’s the patient. But what about the large number of employees – doctors, clinicians, nurses, radiologists, medical assistants, etc. etc. who are often the very people who have to help these patients adapt to the technology changes? More often than not we use adjectives like “outdated” and “slow” to describe the marketing strategies they have in place. The healthcare industry in general is often sluggish to adopt new trends or be active on social media. So, it’s no wonder inbound marketing success stories within the industry are few and far between. (Or, that’s what a quick Google search would lead one to believe.)

When I was about to have some hip surgery a few years ago, I was told I had to have a prescription to OxyContin in place before I even entered the hospital. They wanted to know that I would have access to it “if I needed it” post surgery. Knowing that I have a high tolerance for pain, I told my physician’s assistant it wouldn’t be necessary, extra strength Tylenol would do. But, a prescription to the opioid was a must, so I complied.

At about the same time, the CEO of the American Medical Association, Dr. James Madara, caused a hot-minute kerfuffle with his remarks at their annual meeting in Chicago when he seemed to equate the myriad of digital healthcare tools to the “snake oil” cure-alls that were hawked around the turn of the last century.

Posted by Matt Bowen

China-1.jpgNow is the time for your brand in China. Especially if you are in Healthcare.

But, the issue with most of these reports and thought pieces is that they are just that…numbers on paper. Of course no one questions whether China is a massive economy, but the part that is harder to understand is what does this mean (if anything) for your company and brands?
